Orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle and snake-shaped matrix factorizations

چکیده
Let there be given a probability measure μ on the unit circle T of the complex plane and consider the inner product induced by μ. In this paper we consider the problem of orthogonalizing a sequence of monomials {zk}k, for a certain order of the rk ∈ Z, by means of the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. This leads to a basis of orthonormal Laurent polynomials {ψk}k. We show that the matrix representation with respect to the basis {ψk}k of the operator of multiplication by z is an infinite unitary or isometric matrix allowing a ‘snake-shaped’ matrix factorization. Here the ‘snake shape’ of the factorization is to be understood in terms of its graphical representation via sequences of little line segments, following an earlier work of S. Delvaux and M. Van Barel. We show that the shape of the snake is determined by the order in which the monomials {zk}k are orthogonalized, while the ‘segments’ of the snake are canonically determined in terms of the Schur parameters for μ. Isometric Hessenberg matrices and unitary five-diagonal matrices (CMV matrices) follow as a special case of the presented formalism.

2 00 2 A connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and matrix orthogonal polynomials on the real line
Szeg˝ o's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [−1, 1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials Λ, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module Λ × Λ. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2 × 2 matrix measure on [−1, 1], a...

In this paper we consider a general sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle and we first study the equivalences between recurrences for such families and Szegő’s recursion and the structure of the matrix representation for the multiplication operator in Λ when a general sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle is considered. Secondly, we analyze the co...
متن کاملFive-diagonal Matrices and Zeros of Orthogonal Polynomials on the Unit Circle
It is shown that monic orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are the characteristic polynomials of certain five-diagonal matrices depending on the Schur parameters. This result is achieved through the study of orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle. More precisely, it is a consequence of the five term recurrence relation obtained for these orthogonal Laurent polynomials, and the ...

In this paper we give a survey of some results concerning the computation of quadrature formulas on the unit circle. متن کاملMultivariate Orthogonal Laurent Polynomials and Integrable Systems
An ordering for Laurent polynomials in the algebraic torus (C∗)D, inspired by the Cantero–Moral– Velázquez approach to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle, leads to the construction of a moment matrix for a given Borel measure in the unit torus T. The Gauss–Borel factorization of this moment matrix allows for the construction of multivariate biorthogonal Laurent polynomials in the...
